FOREWARD Project

Creating resilient and sustainable wastewater management systems

What is FOREWARD?

Wastewater from human and agricultural sources severely impacts public health, ecosystems, and the economy. Current centralized wastewater management systems face clear challenges as they rely heavily on energy and chemicals and cannot adequately cope with rapid urbanization, agriculture expansion or climate change. However, local authorities often lack the financial resources and tools to prioritize sustainable wastewater management transition options.

To address this, FOREWARD aims to integrate green technologies with a novel explorative modelling framework to optimize wastewater management. By assessing centralized versus decentralized solutions, the project co-creates resilient strategies for 2030 and 2050 that protect water quality, recover nutrients, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
